Our Story - Helping Children Living on the Streets of Kampala, Uganda

My name is Lutaaya Shaban, and I grew up on the streets of Kampala, Uganda.  As a young boy, I was tortured by my stepmother, and at the age of 9, I lived on the streets.  A good Samaritan stepped in when I was desperate, and helped me until I was 16. When he died, I found myself back on the streets, a high school drop-out.

As a young boy, I knew what it was like to try to survive, to meet my own basic needs, and began to help others do the same. It was at this stage that I developed the idea of creating an organization that would create awareness so the world might understand how difficult it is for the children living on the streets of Kampala as well as other cities in Uganda.  I found I had leadership skills to share, and led other street boys in prayer, conducting individual and group counseling sessions, and teaching other young boys how to be responsible as well as resourceful.

I created a simple Facebook page in order to spread my message, and began making and posting videos so that others might notice our children and become involved in providing for their basic human needs.

Fortunately some people came in and decided to start helping, hence the birth of Hope for the Voiceless. It was officially registered as a nonprofit organization in 2017. During the past five years, there have been many events and encounters that have helped us make progress in different areas.

I invite you on this journey with me, to learn and explore the streets of Uganda and see the impact your generosity makes. Kindly explore our work in action below.

Working in conjunction with your support, we will transform the lives of these young children and ultimately the nation of Uganda.

With gratitude, Shaban
